Orbital is a stunning (and slim) read and I am not surprised it won the 2024 Booker prize. Our family’s favourite film is Interstellar and on Christmas Day our mate who always joins us for Christmas brought the DVD.
Between main and dessert on Christmas Day, we watched the film then we watched the documentary of the science behind the film. As I settled into my river side seat at our campsite near Mt Beauty, I cracked open Orbital and was thrilled to see some of the same observations that astronauts mentioned in the documentary. Orbital is a beautiful story of 24 hours (16 orbits around earth) on the international space station and the philosophical observations of the characters from different countries. It asks the big questions about borders/boundaries, of where we are and to what do we belong, of human desire to be loved.
I saw Samantha twice at the Melbourne Writers Festival and am now wanting to dip back into the book to read it again
This one is a high recommendation
